Phyllanthus niruri

Phyllanhus niruri is commonly known as Bhuiamla. It is also known as Phyllantus amara, Nirurisannua, Nymphanthus niruri, Phyllanthus niruri, Diasperus niruri. Some authors dispute them as different varieties/spices. This drug was proved by Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy at 2 centres. The Council undertook proving of Phyllanthus niruri in 1994–1995 at Drug Proving Research Unit (H), Ghaziabad (U.P.) and Kolkata (W.B.). The proving details are published in “New Drugs Proved by CCRH” by the council in 2008. It was also proved by an independent scholar Dr.George Mathew and published in www.homeobook.com. Whole plant is used for the preparation of mother tincture. A combined materia medica of these two provings and other published data is given below.

Mind

Easily angered, irritates on trifles. Anxiety with depression and no desire to work. Life seems to be very horrible. Aversion to do both mental and physical work. Laziness. Aversion to playing. Fatigue. Concentration difficult. Restlessness, wants to walk about, doesn’t like to lie down. Delusion as if he would fall, while walking, and while riding the two wheeler. Delusion of some incidents happening, which have not actually occurred.

Vertigo

Vertigo worse lying down, looking down, when rising from bed in the morning with intense dizziness, falling to either side. Vertigo associated with pain in eyes with heaviness of eyelids.

Head

Heaviness in forehead with coryza. Heaviness in temples, worse least motion, better light pressure, open air, lying down. Bursting pain extending up to the teeth, worse pressure; better open air, warm drinks. Throbbing pain in head, worse evening, sleep, covering, mild pressure. Pain, severe, dull, aching, better lying down, looking down. Pain, throbbing, bursting, better light pressure, lying down with closed eyes. Throbbing pain in head, finally settles in left sided ear and eye. Pain worse by movement, going upstairs, better taking rest, cold drinks. Frontal pulsating pain, better by pressure. Pain in frontal region with heaviness of head, worse lying in supine position with closed eyes. Pain in right side of forehead, congestive, heavy feeling as if eyeball is pressed out, worse after bath, shaking the head; profuse watering from right eye. Throbbing pain, right side of head after taking cold bath, pain extends to right half of the vertex, better drinking cold water. Throbbing pain in left temporal and occipital region, on alternate days. Dull pain in occipital region, worse lying down, with sleepiness and tiredness. Throbbing pain in temporal region with sleepiness, better pressure, after sleep. Piercing and throbbing pain in temples. Dull aching pain in temples and forehead, worse talking, motion, l p.m. and 9 p.m., better after sleep, and lying down. Headache starts in nape of neck, then in both supra orbital regions, and finally settles in occipital region, with burning as from a volcano, worse 10 p.m., reading, morning in bed and slightest motion. Itching painful papular eruptions on scalp, worse touch. Itching of scalp, also without eruptions.

Eyes

Burning in right eye, inner canthi, worse from touch, washing the face. Dry sensation in inner canthi. Itching in left eye, lachrymation, with coryza. Heaviness of eyes with dull headache and coryza. Heaviness with sensation of drooping of eyelids and sensation as if eyeballs were full of water. Reddish painful stye, on left upper eyelid with redness of conjunctiva. Heaviness worse from reading, and in the evening especially 3-7 p.m. Sensation of heat and burning in the eyes, better closing eyes tightly.

Ears

Stitching pain in both ears, especially left ear with pain in left tempero mandibular joint and itching in left ear. Sensation as if left ear is stopped up while empty swallowing. Pain passing from left eustachian tube to left ear, worse exposure to dry cold wind .Intense stitching pain in right ear accompanied by body pain, chilliness, decreased appetite, and heaviness of head, worse lying on painful side, evening, night, slightest touch, slightest draft of air, stooping, and chewing. Extreme tenderness in front of tragus and in mastoid region. Pain comes and goes suddenly.
Nose

Coryza with headache, running nose, worse in room, better open air. Nasal discharge thick yellow, greenish with stoppage of right nostril. Thin, watery, frequent nasal discharge from left nostril. Thick, yellowish greenish watery discharge, better open air. Yellowish, thick, bland, greenish discharge from nose. Watery, acrid discharge from right nostril,worse exposure to rain. Nasal obstruction, worse during sleep. Sneezing with piercing pain at root of nose with heaviness of head, and great desire to be fanned, better warm room, taking cold drinks. Frequent sneezing with stuffy feeling in nose. Watery nasal discharge (Q,30C, 200C) especially from left nostril. Watery discharge from the free nostril, while the other is stopped up. Stoppage of nose especially left nostril, in the morning, on waking. Both nostrils alternately stopped up. Sneezing, sometimes paroxysmal. White mucoid discharge from left nostril.Sneezing, stoppage of nose and post nasal catarrh of thick transparent tenacious mucus, worse morning on rising.Loss of smell. Rawness in posterior nares better eating, warm drinks. Thick yellowish green coryza with stitching pain in forehead and tenderness in temples. Thick yellowish-white coryza, alternating with stoppage of nose.

Face

Dryness of lips with headache and weakness. Dryness compels to take frequent sips of water, without any relief. Cold sweat of face during headache. Small black mole below lower lip, with visibly congested capillaries.Multiple aphthae, on both lips.Pimples on both cheeks.

Mouth

Aphthae, sore and painful, on both upper and lower lips, stinging pain, worse touch, eating, salty, spicy food; better taking sweet. Swelling of palate and gum of right upper molar teeth. Salivation increased. Tastelessness.Dryness of mouth with sensation as if tongue is sticking to palate. Bitter taste.Redness of soft palate with pain, dryness and itching. Marked loss of taste. No taste for food, after eating a little. Pain in gums during fever. Multiple aphthae.

Throat

Rawness in throat, worse taking solid or liquid. Burning pain in rawness in throat, worse taking cold water, better Sun heat exposure, wrapping the neck with clothes. Constant hawking of white frothy expectoration. Pain in throat with hoarseness of voice and dry cough without expectoration, worse lying down, open air, drinking water; better wrapping up, warm drinks and empty swallowing. Pain in right side of throat, worse during deglutition, eating anything solid or liquid and taking cold. Tearing, pricking pain in throat, better hot drinks, deglutition. Rawness in throat , worse morning on waking, better drinking warm water. Soreness in throat especially left side radiating to left ear on swallowing. Soreness accompanied by hoarseness. Redness of uvula, pharynx and throat.Sensation as if left ear is stopped up while empty swallowing.Soreness of throat, alternating sides.Rawness and dryness of throat with constant inclination to swallow. Soreness, burning pain and dryness in throat worse empty swallowing, and talking. Sensation of a membrane in throat on swallowing. Sensation of mucus collected in throat pit. Has to hem and hawk constantly without relief. Pricking sticking pain in left side of throat, especially left tonsil, worse evening.

Stomach

Loss of appetite as well as increased appetite. Heaviness in stomach, better after sleep, after eating.Nausea in morning, worse looking at food. Nausea and vomiting, worse movement, better taking cold water. Pain in stomach, better taking food, drinking hot tea or water.Thirst increased with desire to drink much at a time. Pain in epigastric region in empty stomach, better after eating, pressure. Stitching colicky pain in left iliac fossa, coming and going suddenly, worse sudden motion. Colicky pain around umbilicus, compelling to lie on abdomen, worse morning. Burning in abdomen, worse morning.Burning in abdomen better after eating.Dull aching pain in umbilical region, worse evening and night, better by cold drinks. Discomfort and colicky pain in night, better by cold drinks. Discomfort and colicky pain in right hypochondrium better by eructation. Itching around umbilicus without eruptions, worse perspiration and touch of clothing.

Abdomen

Flatulence with loud rumbling sounds, better passing flatus. Pain in abdomen, left side, worse least movement, better rest. Severe pain with rumbling sounds in abdomen. Pain around umbilicus, worse while passing stool, better after stool.Stitching pain in right hypochondrium, worse inspiration, movement, better rest, hot liquids. Stitching pain right iliac fossa, worse movement, morning; better lying on painful side, warm milk.

Rectum

Constipation with ineffectual desire, stool small in quantity with mucus. Flatulence of upper abdomen; no desire for but there is urging.Gushing, watery stool with cramping pain in lower abdomen with rumbling sounds during stool, with frequent urge for stool, worse before stool. Diarrhoea, worse on rising from bed in the morning, with ineffectual urging.Loose stool with great urging, worse before stool, better after stool; with sensation of heaviness in the rectum and pain in lower abdomen;much flatus, much rumbling before stool. Loose stools containing undigested particles. Loose, yellowish, pasty, scanty, mucoid semisolid stools. Painless diarrhea worse 5.30 a.m. Tenesmus before stool. Unfinished sensation after stool. Soreness and burning in anus after stool, lasting 10-20 minutes. Urging for stool worse after eating and morning on rising from bed.Frequent urging for stool, sometimes ineffectual. Diarrhoea worse morning after breakfast. Has to sit for a long time, and strain to pass stool, even though stool is loose.Tenesmus and great burning, during and after stool. Diarrhoea accompanied by bitter taste in mouth, easy satiety and decreased appetite.

Urinary

Frequent desire to urinate, hot sensation during urination. Diabetes mellitus, renal calculi.

Female

Menses, painful, profuse.Pain in lower abdomen during menses; with frequent urination, thirstlessness and loss of appetite; watery stool, pain better warm application. Menses early, profuse, dark, clotted with crampy pain in abdomen.Scanty menses with pain in lower abdomen, better by pressure.Menses, delayed with severe pain and pain in lower abdomen, better hot water fomentation. Menses scanty, blackish. Dysmenorrhoea. Stitching pain left ovarian region, worse sitting, walking and in the evening, better by hard pressure, lying on abdomen, pressing thighs against abdomen. Dysmenorrhoea with weakness of lower limbs and vomiting of food without nausea. Pain accompanied by dull lumbosacral backache, with sensation as of a blunt wooden instrument sticking or pressing into the back. Menses early by 4-7 days.Menses scanty and short, lasting only 3 days. Menses with frequent urging for stool, passing soft stool. Intermittent flow of mucoid bloodstained vaginal discharge, during menses.

Respiratory

Respiration difficult, worse walking fast. Expectoration white, thick, yellowish. Dry coughfrom rawness, itching and irritation in throat. Dry cough with chest pain worse early morning, 9 p.m., night, lying down, and exposure to sun, better daytime. Dry cough with sensation of membrane in throat. Salty expectoration. Whitish or greenish sputum. Sensation of suffocation, as if lungs cannot expand properly, worse closed room, lying down, better open air. Dyspnoea with oppression in chest, better expectoration. Has to hem and hawk constantly, to clear the throat of tenacious mucus, which causes dyspnoea. Itching on chest without eruptions, worse perspiration, touch of clothing.

Back

Pain, worse from turning the head, better by pressure.Pain lumbosacral region.Aching type, worse stooping and rising from stooping. Intense pain as if bruised, in lumbosacral region, worse morning on waking and rising from lying down, better standing and continued motion. Pain both sacroiliac joints especially left, worse stooping and motion, alternating with pain in right sacroiliac joint. Aching pain left side of neck, and left scapular region. Backache during menses.

Extremities

Pain in calf muscles of legs, worse standing, walking, better pressure, folding the legs towards abdomen. Pain in calf muscles of left leg extending up to thigh, better by pressure. Pain in both hips, worse lying down; better pressure, sitting. Pain in the legs, calf muscles, cramping pain, worse standing, better walking. Pain in legs, from hips downwards worse movement, better sitting, rest. Cramps in the right calf muscles worse during sleep. Excoriation between thighs and scrotum. Pain in all joints of body, everything seems too hard, unable to sleep due to hardness. Bodyache worse after sleep, better after bathing with cold water.Warts on fingers of right hand, painful, worse pressure. Warts on dorsum of right foot. Rheumatic pains come and go suddenly. Pain in small spots, especially on left knee and left lateral malleolus.Shifting pains. Pains alternating sides left then right especially pain in kneesand pain radial styloid process of hands.Pain in fore arms knees, ankle and malleoli. Cramps in both calves, worse bathing.Cramps in right calf muscles, worse morning in bed, rising from bed in morning, 2 p.m. and walking.

Sleep

Drowsiness but cannot sleep. Sleepiness, cannot open eyes. Sleepy, but cannot sleep. Disturbed sleep especially in early morning hours. Sleep disturbed with frightful dreams of being murdered especially in the first part of sleep. Dreams of hard work or exertion.Laughing during sleep.Continuation of dreams after waking up.

Dreams

Dreams of ghosts, as if three in number, with abnormal dimension of body parts, dressed in multi-coloured clothes.

Fever

Fever with bodyache and headache, frontal and temporal, better pressure, rest. Fever with burning sensation in legs, bitter taste in mouth, and chilliness, dryness of mouth with great thirst, constipation and loss of appetite. Fever with prostration and chilliness. Feverish in morning on rising.Chilliness and gooseflesh, worse least exposure to cold. Body pain, worse slightest touch. Restlessness during fever doesn’t like to lie down, wants to walk about. Heat sensation of upper part of body especially head and neck.Heat sensation of upper parts of the body especially head and neck. Heat first on trunk then on extremities with severe pain in back.

Skin

Itching of forearm without any eruptions, better scratching, cold bathing, worse on perspiration. Eruptions dark coloured in right axilla, worse after scratching. Warts hard, painful worse pressure, flat. Itching in hairy parts of body without eruptions, worse perspiration and touch of clothing. Scratching gives no relief. Small black moles on different parts of body. Pimples on various parts of body.

Generalities
Dull pain in the whole body. Weak, exhausted feeling. Tiredness as if had done great exertion. Weakness after fever worse walking a few steps.
