In Indian medicine, its root is considered as expectorant; bark, leaves and seeds are cathartic. Leaves are anthelmintic and antiseptic. In homoeopathy, it is used for cough, constipation and rheumatic problems, but the provings on it, establishes it as a potential drug for many respiratory problems as well. Externally it may be useful in ringworm because of its chrysophanic acid contents. It needs clinical confirmation in skin problems.
